GJA President Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour addressing the Participants

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour has made a bold statement in respect of Press freedom and safety of Journalists in Ghana at the ongoing Training of Trainers (ToT) in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia under the auspices of UNESCO and International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT).

The GJA President made Justice to his topic : “Freedom of Expression and Safety of journalists: case study of local experiences”, drawing thunderous applause from Participants and organizers.

He gave a vivid account of safety of Journalists and freedom of expression in Ghana and how the GJA under his abled leadership has been doing to protect and ensure safety of Journalists with the ultimate aim of changing the narrative.

The Journalists Support Fund (JSF) and proactive posture of the Association , Mr. Dwumfour stressed will be the game changer in ensuring safety of Journalists in Ghana.

The organisation of this TOT, follows a decision taken at the UNESCO- 67th Bureau Meeting of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) on 15-16 June 2023, supporting the International Association of Women in Radio and Television m(lAWRT) to partner with UNESCO, in building the capacity of journalists, on how to apply technology in their monitoring and reporting activities.

The training is also in line with the UNESCO’s Program on digital literacy for the media and civil society, on the use of technology-based tools such as crowd mapping and Artificial Intelligence (Al).

During the period, the African Union will organize the 1 st Data Governance and Innovation Forum & STC-C-CTC from 17-24, Nov 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, gathering stakeholders from private and public sectors, academia, civil society including the media.

These meetings are to encourage constructive multi-stakeholder dialogue between relevant actors, and identify key interventions, propose recommendations for collaborative actions, and build new networks and partnership.
