A two-day National Anti-Money Laundering and Combating Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Media Workshop has ended in Accra.

The AML/CFT workshop which begun on Monday 27th and ended on Tuesday 28th November 2023, was organized under the auspices of Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) with an objective of creating awareness against the deleterious effects of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (ML/TF) in the region.

Addressing the gathering at the opening ceremony on Monday, the GJA President, Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour welcomed the establishment of Anti-Money Laundering and Combating Terrorist Financing Desks in media houses.

He expressed GJA’s readiness to partner with GIABA in realizing its objectives in that regard.

He later advised the Participants to take the workshop seriously adding that “it is essential for Journalists to prioritize accuracy, verify sources and adhere to ethical reporting” while giving a spotlight to issues of financial crime.

On his part the Representative of Director General of GIABA , Mr. Melaye touched the need for Journalist to conversant with the terminologies within the AML/CFT space hence the workshop.

He explained further that the workshop is to liaise with the media to educate the populace on the negative impact of Money laundering and Terrorist Financing and raise the interest of the public in supporting AML/CFT efforts spearheaded by GIABA.
Mr. Melaye therefore entreated the media to act as agents of change as far as anti-money laundering is concerned.

The Minister for Information Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah commended GIABA for the workshop stating that capacity building is good for the media hence they (media) make good use of the workshop
