The President of the Ga Dangme council, Lawyer Ayikoi Otoo has fired a salvo at President Akufo Addo for “misleading Ghanaians” that Tetteh Quarshie is an Akwapim.

The former Attorney General who was speaking on TV3’s evening news on Wednesday stressed that history can not be changed on the lineage of Tetteh Quarshie.

President Akufo Addo in his Independence Day address had created the impression that Tetteh Quarshie, who first brought the cocoa pod to Ghana from former Fernando po, now Equitorial Guinea, was an Akwapim.

But Ayikoi Otoo will take none of that as he said the President should have known better even if the speech writers made a mistake.

“ Must a every good thing come from.an Akan land?

Everybody knows Tetteh Quarshie is a Ga and not Akwapim”, the President of the Ga Dangme Council fumed.

Giving historical antecedents, Mr. Otoo explained that during the demarcation of Accra land, part of the Accra land entered into Eastern region thereby compelling Gas to go leave in places like Akwapim and other Akan lands emphasizing that, that does not change the fact that Tetteh Quarshie is a Ga.

The Ga Dangme Council earlier issued a statement to debunk the President’s statement.

Below is part of the statement.

“Tetteh Quarshie’s roots in Osu are well-documented, with many sources confirming his ties to the community except that some sometimes link in the Teshie. In both scenarios however he remains of a pure Ga extraction,” it added.
The Council further argued that the assertion that Mr. Quarshie hailed from Mampong lacks concrete evidence and contradicts the established historical narrative.
“It is crucial to correct this misinformation and set the record straight regarding the origins of Tetteh Quarshie. By spreading this inaccurate information, we risk distorting our understanding of history and undermining the legacy of individuals who have made significant contributions to our society. It is essential to rely on factual evidence and historical sources to ensure the accuracy of our narratives,” it said.
