The Director General of GBC, Prof. Amin Alhassan has urged media Practirioners and Journalists to embrace digital media for their career growth.

According to him, with the advent of new or digital media it was therefore necessary for Journalists to leverage on the entrepreneurial opportunities the digital media offers.

Prof. Alhassan was speaking at the GJA 75th Anniversary Celebration Lecture held at KNUST in Kumasi on Wednesday (June 18,2024) under theme “Excellence in Journalism: Honouring the Past and Embracing the Present”.

The GBC Boss later highlighted the importance of self-employment and multi-skilled journalism through the usage of the digital media adding that building a media audience is not limited to traditional affiliations, emphasizing the potential for independent ventures in the media realm.

He emphasized that the future of journalism lies in embracing digital tools and platforms, urging Journalists to harness the power of technology, and multiple skills to innovate within the media space.
“The truth be told, the skill set I left school with to get a job at GNA and later GBC, that same set cannot get me a job today at GBC,” he said.

Prof. Charles Ofosu Marfo,Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

“I’m expecting a journalist who can operate the camera, who can write for online media, who can give a very beautiful branding. It is not just a one skill set. I am telling you, you must come to the job field with the ability to write for online, the ability to shoot and edit your videos at the same time the ability to do your investigations,” he stressed.

He further encouraged training institutions to be mindful of the skills they equip students with due to the constant revolution of the media.

The GJA’s lecture which formed part of its 75th anniversary Celebration emphasized the significance of entrepreneurship and digital skills in the changing media landscape.
