The Vice Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that the NPP government will order hundred (100) electric vehicles for the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Company by the close of this year.
He said the vehicles would augment the existing vehicles of the MMT and help boost the operation of the company.
The Vice President made the revelation when he launched the “Tap and Go” initiative for the MMT in Accra on Monday (February 17, 2024).
Touching on the “Tap and go” initiative, Dr. Bawumia stressed that “today’s launching of tap and go for metro mass is our latest digital initiative for the transport system and it is a momentous journey towards a more efficient transport system”.
He explained that government in collaboration with private sector developed the tap and go project adding that it seeks to build a single system and a common platform for the entire transport system, covering the trotro and taxi.
He said that the initiative would enable passengers to swipe their card for payment when they board the MMT buses thereby reducing traffic during payment.
He emphasized that the initiative will enhance service delivery, prevent delays at stations and also enable the MMT to identify passengers in case of accidents since the card he said will be linked to the Ghana card and momo platform.
The Vice President also noted that the initiative would also reduce corruption and plug revenue leakages in the system.
“Drivers not trusting their mates over day sales will be over
Solution is to provide a single transport card for all commuting passengers”, the Vice President emphasized.
He also revealed that Metro mass was losing 50% of its revenue but since the introduction the piloting of the “tap and go” the leakages have been plugged.
He said now 200 buses are making more revenue than the 500 buses previously on operation.
The Minister for Transport and the MD for the MMT, Hon. Kweku Ofori Asiamah and Albert Adu-Boahen respectively lauded the initiative stating that it would ensure effective monitoring for passenger safety as well as enhancing revenue generation.
