The US Ambassador to the United Nations, H.E Linda-Thomas Greenfield has expressed US commitment towards ensuring peace and security on the African Continent.
She revealed that US has since invested 6.1 billion dollars on peace and security on the continent.
Ambassador Thomas- Greenfield was speaking at a “Conversation on African Leadership Peace and Security” held on Tuesday at the Kofi Annan International Peace Centre (KAIPC) on the sidelines of a UN Peace and Security Conference in Accra.
“Throughout the sahel we’ve seen coups that prevent the people from determining their own leaders” ,the Ambassador indicated.
She added that the coups in the Sahel regions of the Continent are motivated by Vagner group, whom she described as counter-productive.
She revealed that when Vagner was invited by Mali in 2021 more civilians were killed in 2022.
She emphasized that the Vagner group always identifies weak leadership in Africa and takes advantage of them adding that they dont operate on gratis.
“Wagner group goes to where leadership is weak and they go there and provide leadership to the leaders and not the people
They don’t do it for free they take millions of dollars, monies that could be used to build the country”, Madam Thomas-Greenfield emphasized.
She later commended Ghana for the relative peace it is enjoying adding that “Ghana is a net exporter of peace”.
She said Ghana’s support to the UN through the deployment of troops for peace keeping was commendable maintaining that Ghana is a model to other countries
