“Ghana’s Galamsey Generation”:A Tiger Eye’s Expose on Child Labour in Galamsey

A Child Right NGO, ‘O Africa’ is advocating for an immediate stop to children in galamsey activities due to the harmful effects of mercury and other metals used during the galamsey.

In view of the aforementioned, ‘O Africa’ has premiered a documentary by Tiger Eye depicting the escalating threat of mercury poisoning affecting children.

The undercover documentary premiered on Tuesday (January 16, 2024), gives Graphic evidence of the horrors child experience by working in galamsey activities in Ghana, the ripple effects of the creation of each mine taking into consideration the ecological destruction, human rights abuse, an influx of illegal drugs , prostitution and human trafficking for underage labour.

A Social Worker at O Africa, Francis Adepa noted  that seeing children at the age of nine (9) involved in galamsey was shocking and the reason O’ Africa has intensified the advocacy on child labour in galamsey.

He said it is the conviction of the NGO that the relevant and appropriate authorities would act upon seeing this expose inorder to curb the menace.

“There was a pregnant woman whose baby died in her stomach because of the mercury”, Mr. Adepa revealed.

He added that “this is a primary child right issue which we are taking up because our children’s future are being destroyed because of this galamsey”.

O Africa is therefore appealing to government to take the issue of child labour in galamsey seriously and confront it Head on.
