D-G of Ghana Maritime Authority Thomas Alonsi Caught in 14million VLATACOM Scandal

In what appears to be abuse of office, wilfully causing financial loss to the state and wanton profligacy, the Director General of Ghana Maritime Authoriry (GMA), Mr. Thomas Kofi Alonsi is embroiled in a fictitious $14,000,000 VLATACOM contract that has created hue and cry within the Authority.

According to the smoking gun, this is a Contract Mr. Alonsi awarded to a Serbian Company VLATOCOM, to install a State Of the
Art Equipment In The Authority’s Vessel Traffic Management  Information System (VTMIS).

Sources Say 60 Percent Payment
has already been made to the Serbian Company But No Work Has Even Started For The Delivery Of The Contract.

This act of doling out gargantuan state resources in the name of a contract according to Insider sources is an orchestrated plan by the Director General, Mr. Thomas Kofi Alonsi and his Deputy to create, loot and share.

This ignominious conduct which persists within the Ghana Maritime Authority spearheaded by the Director General has set tongues wagging within the rank and file of the Authority with some staff scared of persecution should they engage in positive defiance.

Aside this shady VLATACOM deal which many of the staff consider as rob Peter to pay paul situation, Mr. Alonsi has been spending a whopping hundred thousand Ghana cedis averagely on fuel and per diem.

This abuse of power and misapplication of state funds by the beleaguered Director General is in sharp contravention of the laws governing corporate governance and public Financial management Act which stipulates that public resources must be well protected and allocated.

Many staff of the GMA who have become diffident and silent for fear of victimization have resorted to leaking the rots at GMA to the media.

They also question the basis for those unjustifiable colossal monies paid to Mr. Thomas Kofi Alonsi arguing that the DG’s trips to the upper East region specifically Builsa North where he is contesting as the NPP Parliamentary Candidate are personal rather than official hence abusing his office.

“For the past 2 years every other weekend when the DG is visiting his constituency as an aspirant to the Builsa north constituency on the ticket of the NPP he personally writes a memo for the Authority to finance his trip to the Upper East and he conveniently makes official trip to Upper East. On the average every other month he takes not less than 100,000 from the Authority s coffers e.g. find below as evidence of payments made to him on weekly basis”, the source fumed.

Snippets of information from the Jubilee house have it that barring any last minute changes, the embattled Director General  will be relieved from office owing to the embarrassment and the  bad press the the GMA for that matter the NPP government is receiving over his inactions at the GMA.
