Court Orders Cynthia Morrison to Stop Holding Herself As Independent Parliamentary Candidate.
A District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru has injuncted Cynthia Morrison’s candidature as an independent parliamentary candidate for Agona West in the Central Region.
Cynthia Morrison won the seat for the NPP in 2016 and 2020 but decided to run independently after saying her party schemed to hand her a raw deal in the internal primaries.
This court order by the magistrate says she should not hold herself as a parliamentary candidate until the case is “fully determined.”
The 2024 election is less than two months away, and the case may be determined after the election and it is believed that even if the case is determined before the election, Cynthia Morrison will have lost days, weeks or months of campaigning because of this order.
Many Political watchers find this ruling very worrying questioning why doesn’t the court allow the “VAR system” of justice in this case, which is typical of candidates contesting elections in Ghana.
Cynthia Morrison has been a minister of state in this government and is currently the sitting Member of Parliament for Agona West.
