Arise Ghana Mounts Pressure on Chief Justice to Expedite Action on LGBTQ+; Postpones Family Values March to Oct 8.
Arise Ghana is mounting pressure on Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to expedite action on the LGBTQ issue which is pending at the Supreme Court.
Addressing a news conference in Accra, a member of the group Hon. Sam George argued that a member of Supreme Court Yoni Kulendi has publicly shown his disgust at the LGBTQ , hence the need for the Chief Justice to act on the issue as quickly as possible.
“Yoni Kulendi said Ghana will not bend to peer pressure from other jurisdictions”, Mr. George quoted Yoni Kulendi.
He said the consequences of LGBTQ affects all of us and that all must be involved in this anti-LGBTQ advocacy, highlighting how the continuous silence of the Chief Justice on this matter is not helping the situation.
He therefore appealed to the Chief Justice to make her stance known on the matter.
The MP for Ningo Prampram later announced the postponement of the planned protest dubbed “Family Values March” originally scheduled for Tuesday September 17, 2024, citing coincidence with NDC’s demonstration on voter’s register as the reason for the postponement.
The new date he disclosed is 8th October 2024.
He said the Family Values March is a non-partisan, advising all and sundry to observe it as such and not partake with anything partisan.
On his part, the Co-chair of Citizens Movement Against Corruption, Edem Senanu who is a member of Arise Ghana emphasized that over 93 percent of Ghanaians are in support of the anti-LGBTQ Bill stressing that nothing therefore could be more critical than ensuring that their interest is addressed.
He said its’ been 8 weeks since the case was filed at the Supreme Court yet no feedback has come from the Chief Justice.
Madam Chief Justice, we are appealing to you this matter is of grave importance to Ghanaians, give us some feedback and respect and fulfill the rights and aspirations of Ghanaians”, Mr. Senanu fumed.
He argued that in other jurisdictions, Courts sit during legal vacations so the Head of the Judiciary should do the needful.
Later, the Convener of the group, Mr. Rex Omar questioned the sincerity of the Chief Justice saying “we want to know the stance of Chief Justice whether she stands with the 93 percent of Ghanaians or not”.
He also appealed to Ghanaians to brace themselves up for the massive Family values March on October 8, to mount pressure on the Chief Justice.
