On Friday, September 20, 2024, my immediate seniors from Ghana’s premier high school, St. Augustine’s College (Augusco), supported by their counterparts from Holy Child School, celebrated the 50th anniversary of their admission to the institution with a Memorial and Thanksgiving Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church in Accra.
The thought-provoking and reflective service, which commenced at 12:15 pm, was celebrated by Rev. Father Ramsey Gordon Mao Glover, a proud member of the APSU Class of 1997. Following the Mass, attendees gathered for a nostalgic reception and buffet lunch at the Our Lady of St. Maria Room on the church grounds, rekindling fond memories of their school days.
Rev. Ebenezer Essuman (Chitalo), the Convenor of the APSU ’79 Year Group, delivered a warm welcome address. This was followed by a message from Prof. Henry Nettey, President of APSU ’79.
As part of the celebration, short speeches were delivered by notable figures, including Mr. Joseph Connel, former headmaster of the college and a member of the APSU ’79 year group, and Mr. Kwesi Afful, a former teacher at Augusco. Madam Swanzy Donkor, representing the current headmaster, also addressed the gathering.
Representatives of APSU ’79, HOPSA ’79, APSU ’78, and APSU ’80 also gave optional remarks.
Dr. Ernest Anthony Osei, the APSU Global President, who was in attendance, offered remarks on behalf of the Union and his year group, APSU ’80, which will take on the mantle of organising next year’s event to celebrate their own 50th anniversary in September 2025.
Dr. Osei praised APSU ’79 for rekindling their bond and organizing such a memorable event. He commended their dedication and encouraged other year groups to draw inspiration from their efforts.
After the formal program, the floor was opened for shared stories, filling the room with laughter and joy as cherished memories were recounted, fostering a lively and celebratory atmosphere.
On a more solemn note, a roll call and a minute’s silence were observed in honor of their departed colleagues.
Special recognition was given to Jojo Nutakor (aka Baffa) for his outstanding contribution in financially supporting the group, particularly in settling their arrears with the national body.
Prior to the Thanksgiving Mass, the APSU ’79 year group donated 90 double-decker bunk beds, valued at GH₵: 219,360, to the school.
The beds were purchased from Latex foam with donations entirely made by the year group members.
The anniversary programme also featured a message from Prof. Chris Yao Anani, Chairman of the Organising Committee for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the St. Augustine’s College Class of 1979.
